" IWSC Merlot Trophy Win for 2002 Rosemount Estate Diamond Label Merlot
Rosemount Estate Diamond Label Merlot 2002 has won the Merlot Trophy at this year’s International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). July’s win against a strong field of quality merlots from around the world, marks only the second time in the competition’s history that an Australian Merlot has received the prestigious award.
The fruit for this wine is from Rosemount’s vineyards in McLaren Vale and Mudgee as well as a proportion from the Murray Valley and Langhorne Creek
The 2002 vintage was characterised by cool conditions in spring and summer. A warm, dry autumn ensured the grapes reached optimum ripeness. The long ripening period and cool temperatures ensured the crop was harvested with great character and persistent flavours.
After the wine was fermented it was aged in a mix of American and French oak for 11 months, before being released. It is a vibrant crimson colour, with a lifted, expressive nose with aromas of red berry and plum. A vibrant palate of ripe plum and red cherry is complemented by smooth tannins and integrated oak before a long, savoury finish.
Merlot is emerging as one of the most sought after red wine varietals of Australia. Originating from the Bordeaux region of France, it is regarded there as a variety best suited to blending with its more famous cousin, cabernet sauvignon, along with cabernet franc and malbec. In recent times however, there has been a gathering recognition that in the New World climates, merlot is capable of making excellent wines in its own right. "
